Kaelib’s Kause is a non-profit organization that was born from the heart of a father of a special needs child. Kaelib’s birth was nothing less than tragic and traumatizing as he suffered severe Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE), which is a lack of oxygen or blood flow to the infant’s brain during pregnancy or during delivery. Although many times HIE causes are unknown, Kaelib’s situation was due to a placental abruption in which the placenta detaches from the walls of the uterus during the labor and delivery process, which affects the infant’s central nervous system, causing neurological and/or developmental problems, and certainly is life threatening.
Because of Kaelib’s complicated birth, he does not walk and is nonverbal…..but is one of the happiest kids you will ever meet.
The idea for Kaelib’s Kause happened by chance. Last Halloween was much like any other hectic holiday with 3 children, plans, accommodating for everyone, costumes, candy bowl, etc… you get the scenario. But as “Trick-or-Treat” time came, both Kaelib’s siblings had gotten sick and were not going to participate in the annual candy collection. I, as a father with a don’t give up attitude, gave Kaelib a job! Being that his brother and sister were ill, I told him this year’s candy run for his siblings was all up to him….. He lit up with joy. To see the reaction that came out of that young man, being asked to do a task that can help his family, was nothing less than extraordinary. He was so elated and emotional that every door we knocked on that evening was met with the most joyful laugh you could ever imagine coming from this tiny person in a wheelchair. This was so tremendous and life changing that I knew we had to do something. Something for everyday, not just Halloween, something special for all kids that have special needs to be able to experience the joy my son got just from being able to participate like everyone else.
With the mission being, all children having the opportunity to laugh a little, have some fun, and live their lives to the fullest, Kaelib’s Kause was born.
